Wednesday, July 3, 1929 - Petersburg, VA

We did get an early start this morning. We had gone into town and had breakfast and started by seven. We went thru three states today and broke our record for milage. We went four hundred and nine miles. We went thru South Carolina and North Carolina and now we’re in Virginia within one hundred and thirty miles of Washington. I was quite sleepy the first part of the morning and dozed and slept. It was ten thirty when I came to life and we had gone a hundred miles. We average forty miles an hour before lunch. We had lunch at Fayetteville at a cafeteria. Most of the afternoon we went thru hilly wooded country. The country around here is beautiful but the people are so lazy and slow. It would drive me wild to live here. The more I see of the East the happier I am that we’re going to live in the West. Tonight we’re staying at Jefferson Hotel, Petersburg. Everything around here is either named Jefferson or Lee.
