December 31, 1931 - Thursday, New Year's Eve

In spite of going to bed early I slept late. I played with Eleanor most of the afternoon. Went to a symphony in L.A. In the evening saw movie stars. The streets are crowded and nosy. Rah!

December 30, 1931 - Wednesday

I didn’t have anything to do so I rested all day. I wrote a twenty-two page letter to the family. Quite a day’s work. Mrs. Williams has gone out so I am going to bed early.

December 29, 1931 - Tuesday

We were up at ten. At noon Ruby Hayes Erkenbecker came over to lunch. It was good to see her again. She stayed until 4:30. Called up Boone Hendricks and went to dinner with him at 6:30. Home at 10:30.

December 27, 1931 - Sunday

Got up late. Had a huge dinner this noon. Wrote many letters in the afternoon. Mrs. Williams had guests. In the evening we saw “Hell Divers” at Chinese in Hollywood. A most marvelous show.

Jane’s Notes: Wikipedia says “Hell Divers” is a 1932 film starring Wallace Beery and Clark Gable as a pair of competing chief petty officers in early naval aviation. However, Ann saw the film in December of 1931 so it must have been released for the holiday season. The film, made with the cooperation of the United States Navy, features considerable footage of flight operations on board the Navy's second aircraft carrier, the USS Saratoga, including dramatic shots of takeoffs and landings filmed from the Curtiss F8C-4 Helldiver dive bombers after which the movie was named. “Hell Divers” was officially Gable's first "starring" role and filmed before he grew his trademark mustache.

December 26, 1931 - Saturday

Nice surprise for me this morning. Three letters from George. After lunch Eleanor and I went downtown with Mrs. Williams while she did some shopping. After dinner Mrs. Williams and I saw Gloria Swanson. Good!

Jane’s Notes: Gloria Swanson was in two movies released in 1931, “Indiscreet” and “Tonight or Never.”
