July 31, 1931 - Friday

Doro and I got ambitious and went down to the lake this afternoon. We had plenty of time so we stayed down half an hour. George and Fred Ahern were down there. Well this will be a month to remember. My first month of honest labor for money. Even if it is just as a chamber maid. Boy I sure can make beds.

Jane's Notes: Fred Ahern, a familiar name and another life long friend.

A letter post marked July 31, 1931, Medford, Oregon

Addressed to: Joug Lavender Hibblerd, Crater Lake Lodge, Crater Lake, Oregon

Cartoon drawing at the top of six figures hanging off of a car. Caption: Barnes Arrives with a few close friends. Note new Rolls Royce. Accommodations must be first class.  I have forgotten but will try to find out by the time that I write another letter.

Dear Joug:

Your private messenger, alais, bubbie the Sleeeetrrr, delivered a proculmatum to the effect that my presence at the lake was indispensiable and I, realizing your sorry plight, have decided to pay you a short visit for a couple or three weeks. I intend to make this a combination pleasure and business trip. I find that in looking over my books that one of the lake’s employees has an outstanding debt of one dollar and eighteen cents payable on or before December 1, 1930. Due to the extreme difficulty expierenced by this department in trying to negociate with this party by mail I have decided that a personal visit is most likely to be effective as I intend to get a photographic evidence of the vices of said debtor and upon securing said evidence intend to forward I immediately to certain Portland addresses unless prompt payment of one eighteen and cost are presented.

Should I wear my new Tux or just a simple old full dress? You see I haven’t been around a bunch of lumber jack bums since I left the lodge and am not accustomed to their habits and idiocincrecies (pronounce it and you will know what I mean). I am sorry to find; that is I am realy very, wery, wery, wery, perturbed to discover or find to my unter disipointment that without the slightest effort on my part and without the least knowledge, that this here paper I ge-finished. Hut duwg.

C. D. Barnes

Jane's notes: All spellings authentic to the letter.

July 30, 1931 - Thursday

Again we were thru before one. I read and mended stockings in the afternoon. At six o’clock George Hibbard and I went down to Castle Crest Gardens. Beautiful.

George's letter home:

Hello Mom,

I received my receipted insurance note from Dad today, and he had some encouraging news about our Lodge. I surely appreciate his paying for that and also, all those greenbacks.

I hiked down to Castel Crest Gardens to night, and it certainly is a beautiful sight. It is a little valley with high peaks rising on either side. A little creek winds all through it and is crossed and re-crossed by little log bridges. The place is just filled with wild flowers of every kind one can imagine. Beautiful is no word for it; we surely will have to visit it when you come up here. When I reached the farther end; I looked back and there was a great black bear crossing the valley’s head. Oh, it is a wild, wild country Mom.

The park never seems to leave me; each day the lake presents a new aspect and the sunsets are the most beautiful I have seen.

I do need some more stamps and I really should have more boot socks. As it is, I wear these about four days apiece. That really is too long in the heat up here.

Take care of that young canine friend of mine, and see that he behaves himself.

Love, George

July 29, 1931 - Wednesday

We got thru before one o’clock and I was on duty the long afternoon! After dinner I sat in front of the fire with George & Gene and laughed myself sick.

Jane's Notes: "On duty" seems to mean you hang out in the lobby and talk with guests.

July 28, 1931 - Tuesday

During the morning and early afternoon everything seemed to go wrong for me and I couldn’t get thru early. I washed and ironed later in the afternoon and sewed too! But the day ended well – went to dance with Gene.
