Wednesday, July 31, 1929 - Chicago, Ill.

As usual nothing was accomplished this morning. Pop was gone by the time I woke up this morning. Pop and Doug left on the eight o’clock train for South Bend to get the car. After much talking and discussion it was lunch time again. Harry wasn’t feeling well so he didn’t eat any and just as we finished Paul arrived. So we gave him something to eat and just as he was finishing Pop and Douglas arrived but they had had lunch. We persuaded Pop to take us swimming so Paul, Ed and June and I went swimming and Pop and Aunt Hortie took us in the car but it was such a long way down and back that we only had a short time in the water. We went into Lake Michigan. The water was cold and I never had so many people on a beach unless it was in the movies. When we got back it was supper time. After supper we all went down to the show, nine of us. We went down on the “L” so we wouldn’t have to take time to park. We saw “After Dark”. It was a reproduction of a play given in 1869. It was well done but it was rather boring and nobody liked it much. We stopped at a soda fountain coming home.

Tuesday, July 30, 1929 - Chicago, Ill.

We were late in getting up, late in getting breakfast and it was Noon before we got started. We just sat around and talked trying to decide what to do. We were going to the “five and ten” but Edwin (Lottie’s son that we didn’t see in Laurence) and Harry who had stayed at Douglas’, didn’t arrive on the scene until almost twelve so we had lunch before we started out. When we finally got started we went to the “Malbaro” to see “Noah’s Ark”. It was a wonderful picture and a beautiful play house. Then we went on down to the Loop back to Marshal Fields. This time we went all thru the store and ended up at the tea room eating ice cream. Mania, Lottie, Aunt Hortie and Douglas’ wife hadn’t come up, they had gone to Douglas’ to get supper. We went there from Fields to supper. After supper there was much singing and noise until ten thirty. Then Doug, Pop and I took Lottie, Ruth and Shirley to the station. (Shirley had made a flop of it so she was going home). They left Ed with Harry. Pop and I parted from Doug at the “L”. He went home and we back to Aunt Hortie’s.

Monday, July 29, 1929 - Chicago, Ill.

They let us sleep as long as we could this morning and it was after nine when I woke up to stay awake. While we were sleeping Pop took the car over to the Studebaker factory to have it completely overhauled. Pop announced that we would leave for Chicago at twelve. So June and I went down and got some breakfast and then went to the barber shops and had our hair washed. As soon as we got back to the room Mom, June and I dashed out to get June some shoes but she was so stubborn that we couldn’t get her satisfied. So we dashed back to the hotel and into a taxi that took us to the electric station. We had lunch on the train and got to Chicago at a little after two. We were near the Un. of Chicago. So we looked up Paul and went to his rooms. We talked with him a while and made plans about meeting him again and then went downtown to the loop. We went to Marshal Fields and got June some shoes and then got on the “L” and went to Aunt Hortee. All the family was there including Harry, Lottie, Ruth, Eldon, Douglas & wife and Shirley. Had supper, talked and to bed.

Sunday, July 28, 1929 - South Bend, Ind.

Pop let us sleep this morning and it was seven thirty before I woke. I don’t know what time it was when we got started but Pop wasn’t in a hurry (which is very surprising) and after we did get started he drove fairly slow. We had gotten a paper while we were eating and June and I consumed the news. Sunday is the only paper we get if we get that. We got to the little town where Pop was to look up some of the Neoine’s relatives at just about twelve o’clock. They were old cousins of my grandfather. They were delighted to see us. We had a huge lunch with them and then about three moved on. We got here about seven o’clock. We came here so Pop could have the car gone over. They are made here. We got settled in a room and then went out to supper. If the job is going to take very long we are going to Chicago and then Pop is sending back for the car. It was terribly hot yesterday, 90 in the shade and the paper predicted hotter today but instead its been cloudy and cool quite a relief.

Saturday, July 27, 1929 - Lansing, Mich.

As per usual we were up at six this morning and started at eight. It took them a long time to bring the car around but in spite of the delay we got started at eight. We took our time and it was ten thirty when we got into Detroit. We went to Bell Isle when we where to meet Amy at eleven thirty and John at one. We rode around the park (a beautiful place) and saw some of the animals in the zoo. At about quarter to twelve we met Amy at the Casino where we had lunch. We had just finished when John showed up. We went with him and Amy to where he lives and met the people he is living with. They are lovely. The wife reminds me of Mary Pickford. We didn’t stay long. Then dashed on to here. At first the traffic was heavy because it was Sat. afternoon and people were heading for the lakes. When we got here we went right thru to about six miles South where after quite a bit of hunting and questioning we found the old home that Pop was born in. The people that live there knew Grandfather. They were using the house for grain. Came back ate a snack, had a bath & to bed.

Friday, July 26, 1929 - Toledo, Ohio

Last night June and I slept in the darlingest antique bed. My great uncle had slept in it. It’s the best looking thing. I like Ed and Hat the best of all the cousins. We were supposed to get started at ten this morning, but art and May were going part way with us and Art was late in getting dressed and then the other sister came out from town and there was a little visit with her so that it was almost twelve before we got started. We were headed for Cedar Point a famous summer resort and park. We got there about three and had lunch. We looked around. There were some gorgeous roller coasters there, and then went to see the Blue Hole. A remarkable wonder of nature. It’s a pool that is supposed to be the outlet of an underground river. The water as clear as glass and the bottom of the pool is an electric blue. Then we parted with Art, May and Terry. We had hoped to get to Detroit but it was so late by then and a storm was forming (it was only a shower) so we just headed for here and looked up a hotel.

Thursday, July 25, 1929 - Elyria, Ohio

Pop got us up at six this morning. We were staying at an old fashioned hotel and we had breakfast in the dinning room. It certainly must have been a grand place in it’s day. I loved it. We got started about eight. It had rained early in the morning and it was very gray all morning. For awhile it was raining so hard that we could hardly see ahead. About eleven thirty we had a soft time so while we were stopped we had lunch at a green lunch wagon. It was in a little town in the corner of Penn. that sticks up. We went thru Buffalo and Erie this morning and for awhile we followed the Lake Erie shore. You can’t anymore see across it than you can an ocean. In the afternoon it got quite warm. About five when the traffic was worst we hit Cleveland. And we had to go from one end to the other about fifteen miles. So we were late about seven when we got to Pop’s Powell Cousins, Ed, Arthur, May and Terry. They’re about his age. We talked until twelve. June and I stayed with Ed and his wife Hat, and Mom & Pop with Art & May (another sister).

Wednesday, July 24, 1929 - Niagara Falls, NY

It was eight standard time when we left his morning. It was hard to wake up at six too. We’re getting back into the farming country now. On almost every farm we saw people taking in hay. We saw quite a few fields of wheat and grain and millions of antique shops. Ever since we left Atlantic City but they’ve never been as thick as they have been the last few days. I have just been dying to go in one but “we can’t take the time.” Before noon we passed several lakes. The Finger Lakes of N Y. They looked lovely and summery. We had lunch at a little dinner half way between here and there. We went thru Utica and Syracuse this morning. At about four o’clock we got here. We went straight to the falls without even stopping at a hotel. We went over to Goat Island. After looking at the Falls we went on the trip to the Cave of the Winds. We had to put on special suits and we went right down into the spray of the American Falls. I expected a lot of the Falls but not this much. We went to a hotel and left our things and then went to the Canada side to  see the falls. We had supper there watched the lights and came back.

Tuesday, July 23, 1929 - Johnstown, NY

What impressed me most about today’s trip was lakes. Beautiful, big lakes. It was fairly late when we got started this morning and we didn’t go so far on our way today. We traveled thru hills and pines on good roads. If the roads are good we can enjoy the scenery. About eleven we got to Burlington where we got our first glimpse of Lake Champlain. We looked across and the mountains across the lake were lime. We followed the lake to Crown Point where we crossed by a ferry. At Charlotte before we crossed we had lunch at a pretty clean green dinner. The ferry was tiny just big enough for three cars. Later on we followed Brant Lake for five miles. About three we came to the town of Lake George. Lake Gorge and Champlain are joined by a river. We followed it for a while at the North end and then saw it again at the very Southern tip. Whenever we followed a lake shore we saw heaps of summer cottages. People in swimming and paddling canoes. Looked no end of fun. We drove in here about six thirty standard time (every few towns have day light saving, very confusing). We’re staying at a tourist home that we’ve seen so many of.

Monday, July 22, 1929 - Barre, Vt.

We saw so much beautiful scenery today! It changed from rolling hills to mountains. The trees gradually changed to evergreens as we went up higher.  It was all very beautiful and splendid. After breakfast this morning we went past Manchester and then north to Waire to look up Mom’s ancestors. We found an old history of the town and several very interesting old characters. We stayed there until eleven o’clock. At noon we stopped at Concord for lunch. It was then about eleven thirty standard. They don’t have daylight saving here. We got into the Green Mt. about two thirty or three. We saw the Indian head and the great stone face or the Old man of the Mountain. We took a short ride to see Mt. Washington highest peak in New England. Then we started West for Vermont about four o’clock. The scenery was even more beautiful in this state we thought. We got some pure maple sugar along the road. We stopped again at the center of the industry. We didn’t quite reach our destination tonight but we’re only five miles from it.

Sunday, July 21, 1929 - Nashua, NY

Another Sunday without going to church! We don’t seem to be stopped when ever Sunday comes. All day we traveled thru the same hilly green countryside with the tidy farms. We left Hartford about nine and got to Boston about two o’clock. On the way in we stopped at a place between Providence and Boston for lunch. It was a place where they specialized in ducks, where they raised them by the thousands. So we had a duck dinner. When we got into Boston we went down to the old section and picked up a guide that showed us the Old North Church, Old Ironsides, Bunker HIll and so forth! We dropped him and went on the Public Library. Then we went on to Cambridge. We looked over Harvard College and then picked up a guide that was a Harvard graduate. He showed as all over the countryside connected withe Battle of Lexington and Concord, and all the homes of the poets and authors. We left him about six and came on here. It was dark when we stopped almost, so we stopped instead of going on any further.

Saturday, July 20, 1929, Hartford, Conn.

We wanted to get started this morning but June and I had to pack and Mom had to go to the doctors so it was ten before we got started. The traffic was so heavy that we didn’t make much time. At about eleven we got out of the city. The scenery was lovely and green and hilly. We had to cross the Hudson and it certainly was a lovely sight looking down the Hudson. We got just outside the gates of West Point at twelve thirty. We stopped and had lunch. When we got to the Point people were gathering to see the parade. We stopped and watched them march around. It was about two when they finished. We went over to the camp where the cadets were and inquired for Alto Graham. We talked with him until three. He asked me to stay to the dance tonight. That would have been heavenly, but we couldn’t. From there we went across to Connecticut. It certainly is a beautiful state. Lovely old white old fashioned houses. We stopped at an old fashioned tavern for supper. Then we went on to Hartford to stay all night. Heaps of trees in this country.

Friday, July 19, 1929, New York City

This was a lovely morning. We spent most of it shopping, that’s why! We went down to Macy’s (the store where we stopped) by the subway. On the way down we stopped at the New York Public Library while Pop looked up the genealogy of the Starr family. I copied the coat of arms. Then we went on to the store. The rest of the morning I spent trying on dresses. Out of the many I choose three. One evening, one afternoon and one school dress. I had expected to only be allowed to get one. I had that chosen when Mom suggested I choose another. Then Pop suggested a third. For lunch we went to an automat. Our first. You put your nickels in the slot and get your food out of a little door. Then we went back to the hotel. At about two we got the car and started for Mont. Clare where we saw some more of Harry’s cousins. We also saw some of the beautiful houses. We had tea at Cousin Julia’s. We got back to the hotel at about seven thirty. Pop and Mom were tired but June and Harry and I went to the show. We saw “Bulldog Drummond” and liked it.

Thursday, July 18, 1929, New York City

This morning we took our ride to Oyster Bay. We wanted to see the beautiful home on Long Island and Roosevelt’s Home. It took us a long time to get out there because there was so much traffic. We went in our car. We wandered around all morning in the many highways and by ways enjoying the lovely scenery and pretty towns. We found Roosevelt’s home and then started back into the city. On the way in we stopped at one of these dining car lunch counters for lunch. Then we rushed on into town. We went to the matinee of “The Journey’s End”. Mom was too tired to go so we left her at the hotel and went on. It was a wonderful play about the English in the World War. There were no women in the play. After the play we went out to dinner and afterwards we went to the comedy play “Let Us Be Gay” that was very good but I don’t think June and Mom enjoyed it so. It was bout modern youth and divorce and Mom always makes faces over that. We strolled down Broadway on the way back and there certainly were mobs of people. You couldn’t see anything but heads down the street.

Wednesday, July 17, 1929, New York City

We slept so late this morning that it was twelve before we got started down town. June and I had breakfast and lunch together it was so late. We went in the subway down to the very end of Manhattan. We wandered around the park there and saw Lady Liberty herself. Then we saw Trinity Church and all the hamour graves. Then we went to the top of the Woolworth Building to look things over. Then we dashed to the subway again to get back up town. On the way down town we had come as far as Washington Square on a bus. We had a bite to eat before going to the show which made us a little late but it didn’t spoil the story for us. We saw “New Moon”. June’s and my first musical comedy. We seem to be doing a lot of things for the first time. It was a wonderful show. Beautiful costumes and setting. Handsome hero Harry introduced us to him after the show. I was so thrilled that I couldn’t say anything. Afterward we drove out to one of suburbs by Riverside past Grant’s Tomb. We called on one of Harry’s cousins then right home.

Tuesday, July 16, 1929, New York City

It was nine thirty when June and I woke up this morning. Pop had gone down town on a business errand so us females got collected after June and I had dashed over to the cafeteria across the way for breakfast. I washed my hair and wrote letters. About one Pop came back and we went out to lunch. At two we started to the Base Ball game that was at three because it was so far away. June and I had our first ride on an elevated. It was a National League game between the Giants and Cardinals. The Cardinals won 5 to nothing. A good game. It was quite exciting seeing our first big league game. We came home and right away started for Coney Island. Again June and I did something for the first time. Road on a subway. At Coney we met a cousin of Harry’s. He spent the evening with us. I like him. We had supper at a place by the water. Afterwards we watched the fireworks. Then we had our good times. I won a doll that he had won. We were just getting started when it was suddenly twelve o’clock.. We had our silhouettes made. On the sub going home a man gave me Loung Lucy.

Monday, July 15, 1929, Broadway & 55th, New York City

As usual we got a late start this morning. We went all the way down the board walk for our breakfast. By the time we got all packed and started it was almost eleven. We went straight up the coast . Nothing of interest happened until we hit Elizabeth, one of the outlying cities of New York. We got there about two thirty. We stopped and looked in the phone book for Dr. Wade, Mrs. Salmon’s brother. We stopped and had a little visit with him before going on. He and his wife are darling. How Pop ever kept his wits about him and drove in New York traffic right up Broadway to the Woodward Hotel is more than I can understand. He seemed to know his way around having only been here once before. Cousin Harry was at the hotel to meet us and took us up to the tenth floor to a most beautiful suite of rooms. He is certainly treating us royally. We spent the time until dinner spreading ourselves out. We ate at a cafeteria across the street. Then we went to Roxys the most famous movie theater in the world. Afterward we wandered up the great white way.

Jane's Notes: The Woodward is now a Best Western. Must have been quite a grand dame in it's day.

Sunday, July 14, 1929, Atlantic City, NJ

Pop let us sleep late this morning so as a result it was after ten when we got started. In fact it was twenty five to eleven. All these far Eastern cities seem to have daylight saving. There was so much traffic on the road that it was almost one when we got there. We had to be back in Vineland at two so we dashed out and got some sandwiches and had our lunch en route. When we got there the program had already started. Nash, the man that showed us around yesterday wasn’t there but Mr. Johnston the director took us in hand. After the program he took us thru the school house and dairy. Pop and Mr. Nash talked so long that it was five before we got started back. It was six when we got back to Atlantic City (we had located a hotel our first trip) so we didn’t go swimming. Instead we started up the board walk. Lt. Cole certainly knew what he was talking about when he called it New Jerusalem. I never  saw so many Jews in all my life. We wandered around until seven then went to a Hippodrome on one of the piers. We stopped at a Cluilds (sic) on the way home for something to eat.

Saturday, July 13, 1929, Bridgeton, NY

We intended to leave at eight this morning and it was 8:15 when we started which is pretty good considering our late departures of late. Just as we were finishing breakfast Steve came in to say goodbye. On the way out we went thru the Academy grounds so June could see it. We saw them drilling the Plebes. We started out for Vineland. But because of traffic and one thing and another we didn’t make it. It took us an hour to get thru Baltimore. The streets certainly are narrow in town but just as we were leaving there we hit the side road and we certainly had a beautiful hi way the rest of the way. We came thru the corner of Delaware and had lunch at Wilmington, Delaware's largest city. We got to Philly as they call it around here about three. We were lucky enough to pick up a cop just going off duty who took us the right way to Independence Hall and showed us the way out. We got to Vineland the place we might put Eleanor at about five or six by daylight savings. They invited us to supper and showed us around a bit after. The Supervisor advised us to come here because the hotel was better.

Friday, July 12, 1929, Annapolis MD

We were supposed to have started at eight this morning but it was after nine when Mom & Pop came after June and I. While I was waiting I finished the book. With all the traffic and all it was after ten before we finally leftWashington. As a result it was about a quarter after twelve when we got here. I called up Steve and he came over to have lunch with us but the waiter was so long with the order that Steve had to dash back to school before he had eaten. After we had finished lunch we drove out to Aremdal-on-the-bay where the Derickson’s live to see them. Mrs. Derickson was in Washington and Dick’s in the Academy so we only saw the Commander and Bowen. We left June out there. On the way home we drove by the State House. It was about a quarter to four when we got back to the hotel. Steve came around at four. We got in our cars and went around to Steve’s house and picked up Lt. Cole. They took us thru the USNA. We spent the rest of the afternoon there. We saw Dick and watched supper formation. Steve & Lt.Cole had supper with us. About ten the Dericksons brought June home and I saw Mrs. Derickson. Then Steve and I went for a ride. Home at 11:45.

Thursday, July 11, 1929, Washington, D. C.

We were supposed to get started at about eight fifteen this morning to go sight seeing. So Mrs. Berry woke us up at quarter to eight. After I had had breakfast I started reading Burning Beauty, a story in McCall’s by Temple Baily that I had always wanted to read. Before I knew it it was eleven thirty and Mom and Pop hadn’t come for us to take us sightseeing. At about twelve they called up and said that they had gone out to the doctors at Fort Washington instead. They came out to Clare’s a little bit later and had lunch with us. Right after lunch we dashed down to the white house and went thru the rooms that we could go thru. It was three when we got back to Clare’s. We got our suits and went out to Chevy Chase pool, Clare, Pop, June and I. We got back home a little after five. We passed some beautiful homes going out and in. The family left me at the Berry’s to dress. After I had dressed and while I was waiting for them to come back for me I read. We went to Col. Hickman’s for dinner (Anna & Lawrence, too). Later we went to the Congressional Country Club to dance. Back to Clare’s at one.

Wednesday, July 10, 1929, Washington D.C.

We had to get up early this morning because we had to catch the seven thirty boat into Washington. The whole family but Lawrence were up to see us off. We took some pictures before we left. I was so sleepy that I almost went to sleep on the way in. A good looking Lt. helped us get our bags off the boat. Mom and Pop were at the dock to meet us. First we went over to the camp where they stayed last night and got rid of some of our stuff. From there we went to the monument and then dashed over to the Capital. We got there just as a guide was starting out. They took us about an hour and then from there we went to the Congressional Library. By the time we got out of there we were so tired that we decided to go for a ride before lunch. We met Clare at the Allies Inn at twelve thirty. After lunch we all went out to Arlington Cemetery (after getting lost). We looked up Gene’s grave while we were there. We spent most of the afternoon there. When we came back we went to Clare’s for dinner. After dinner we took a ride then Pop and Mom went back to the camp and the Berries took us to the show and we’re staying with them tonight.

Tuesday, July 9, 1939, Ft. Washington, MD

Well we stayed over tonight. We were going back with Clare but we decided to stay over one more night. Anna gave a bridge luncheon for Lucile and I. After we dressed and had breakfast. We helped with the preparations until it was time to dress. This morning the electricity was still off and because so many things depended on that there certainly was some bustling around here. Just as I got dressed the first guest arrived and Anna wasn’t ready so I went down to receive them. At twelve all the girls got there and we started playing bridge. There were three tables and we progressed. We stayed until one thirty and then had a gorgeous lunch beautifully served. After lunch we drove the girls from town around the fort. They had to catch the three thirty boat. Anna Louise, Lucile and I went with them just for the ride. When we got to the War College where the boats were, we got off long enough to get some cones and while we were gone it started to rain and we were drenched before we could get back to the boat so we went into the ladies room and took off our dresses and let them dry. Tonight after supper all us kids went to the show. Then I packed, now to bed!

Jane’s Notes: Mom’s scrapbook has a bridge tally card from the party. It also has a telegram dated July 9 which reads: "Annapolis MD Captain Bonnoer . Please tell Annabelle bring bathing suit period Expect Powells have lunch with me Friday Noon Carvel Hall Regards Steve."

Monday, July 8, 1929, Ft. Washington, MD

We were going to spend another day of sight seeing and we didn’t see a thing and I never spent such a hot day in all my life. We got up rather late and had a late breakfast. At about nine Mom told us that she was going to the doctor and for us to be ready and waiting when she got back. At ten we were ready having dressed and done a few odd jobs besides. But they didn’t come back until eleven almost. Then our family and Anna Louise and Lucile went into town. We spent about a half an hour shopping before lunch. Then after lunch we shopped until three. Then Mom and Pop waited to see about a place to stay in town tomorrow and by the time we had done that it was time to start home because we wanted to get back in time to see the parade. We left town about a quarter or ten to four and got out here at twenty to five. After the parade and address we came home and had supper. As we were finishing a wind and some rain blew up and cooled it off for awhile and put out the light until a few minutes ago!

Sunday, July 7, 1929, Ft. Washington, MD

We slept fairly late this morning but not too late because the church started at nine. We sat in the choir at church, it was outside and we sat in the sun. It was good to get back to the house. Yesterday we telegraphed Steve and asked him out, so soon after we got back he drove up in his new Ford. Bonners had gone to Sunday School so we had him to ourselves for a while. When the Bonners came back there was a lot of introducing then we talked until one thirty. Then we had lunch and it was almost three when we got thru. Steve had to leave about five thirty so he could get back by dark. The time went so fast between lunch and five thirty. It went all too quickly for me. I certainly wish I could see more of Steve before we leave. While he was here I tried out his car and approve of it very much. It’s darling! Steve left at about five thirty. After he left we sat around for awhile and then decided to go over to the sunday evening picnic, that is us girls went (Anna, Lucile, June, Helen and I). When we got back we were going to the movies but we found there wasn’t any. So after fooling around awhile we decided to hit the hay.

Saturday, July 6, 1929 - Ft. Washington, MD

We sight saw today and we didn’t do it half way. We got up early and had breakfast and caught the seven thirty boat into the city. As soon as we landed we started out for the Smithsonian Institute. We tramped around in there from one hall to another until eleven and I’ll say the dogs were tired. At eleven we went for a short ride to cool off before lunch. Last night I called up Clare Berry and made a date with her to have lunch together. So at twelve we went to the Hotel Washington to meet her. She took us to the Allies Inn. There was our family and Anna and Lucile (Gene’s fiancé, the darlingest [sic] girl who is staying wit them too) and Clare and her chum and her mother and father, making ten of us trooping in for lunch. After that we went to an art gallery across from it and then on to the Annual Collection back at the museum. At about five the Berries left us and we rode around the Lincoln Memorial. At five thirty we went back to the Allies Inn for supper. After supper we went to the Fox where we met the Conners and went to the show. It’s about ten thirty but I’m just about dead and my butt.......

Jane's Notes: The Smithsonian obviously didn't impress her.

Friday, July 5, 1929, Ft. Washington, MD

This was our first day at sight seeing altho’ we only spent a half a day at it. When we got up Mom and Pop had gone into the city and left us behind but they told Mrs. Bonner that they wouldn’t go sightseeing without us. Pop took the car down to put it in the shop. Anna and I didn’t do much but talk all morning. About ten we went over to the old fort to look it over, then we went back and got the camera and took some pictures from the wall. Mom and Pop and Lawrence (he went down with them) came back from town on the boat at noon. After lunch Pop, Mom, June, Anna Louise and I went over to Mount Vernon by water. We crossed the Potomac and were met by the commanding officer at Fort Hunt (across the river) who took us to the trolly which we took to Mount Vernon. We stayed there until four. Just as we got off the trolley it started to rain. But as soon as we got into the boat it stopped. After supper tonight we listened to the radio. While we were gone a telegram came from Steve asking about my where abouts. This fort was planned by the planner of Washington. And this house is a hundred and seventeen years old. It’s so cool and lovely here.

Jane's Notes: I guess they must have been visiting the Bonners. Cool in Washington in July? Must just be the contrast with Manila.

Thursday, July 4, 1929, Ft. Washington, MD

Pop woke us up at six this morning because he wanted to be sure to be at Fort Washington by noon. We only had 130 miles to go and it didn’t take us long once we got started. All yesterday afternoon and this morning we kept passing thru the battle grounds of the Civil War! And this morning every few feet we would see a sign telling us all about what took place there. About ten or ten thirty we came to the church where Washington went. We went in and sat in his pew and got pictures and went on into Washington. There we inquired our way out to Fort Washington. On the way we went thru the capital grounds and saw the monument which was all quite thrilling. We got out to the Fort a little before noon. We had lunch with them and then Anna and I talked until about three and then we went swimming. When we got back supper was about ready. After that we went in to the city to see the fire works which was the only fourth of July spirit I felt all day long. It didn’t seem like a holiday. Happy reunion!

Jane's Notes: I don't know who they were visiting at Ft. Washington but I presume friends from Manila.

Wednesday, July 3, 1929 - Petersburg, VA

We did get an early start this morning. We had gone into town and had breakfast and started by seven. We went thru three states today and broke our record for milage. We went four hundred and nine miles. We went thru South Carolina and North Carolina and now we’re in Virginia within one hundred and thirty miles of Washington. I was quite sleepy the first part of the morning and dozed and slept. It was ten thirty when I came to life and we had gone a hundred miles. We average forty miles an hour before lunch. We had lunch at Fayetteville at a cafeteria. Most of the afternoon we went thru hilly wooded country. The country around here is beautiful but the people are so lazy and slow. It would drive me wild to live here. The more I see of the East the happier I am that we’re going to live in the West. Tonight we’re staying at Jefferson Hotel, Petersburg. Everything around here is either named Jefferson or Lee.

Tuesday, July 2, 1929 - Charleston, SC

I woke up too soon this morning and I’ve had a headache and been sleepy all day. We left Aunty Margaret’s at eight but after we got into Jacksonville Mom and June and I went to get some shoes so it was twenty five minutes to ten before we finally got started. We made good time this morning and did a hundred miles before lunch. We had it at a auto camp just out of Brunswick. I slept some this morning and a little after lunch. All day long we drove thru groves of trees with Spanish Moss hanging from them. It has been very picturesque. All along the road they have been telling us when we ask about a beach at Charleston to go to the Folly Beach. Yes there was a hotel there and everything. No matter how thin yo slice it, it’s still baloney. We got to the beach. There wasn’t a sign of a hotel anyplace and too late to go back into Charleston. So here we are in the littlest old dump imaginable. And we had to eat at the dirtiest restaurant. I’l be glad when we leave tomorrow. We have planned an early start.

Monday, July 1, 1929 - Jacksonville Beach

I don’t know what time it was when we got up but where we were in swimming it was seven. We got into our suits as soon as we woke up and went swimming before breakfast. We came in and took our showers and then had breakfast. After breakfast I wrote a letter and read until lunch. After lunch I wrote again and about one thirty June and I went swimming again and we stayed in until five thirty. Then we came in and sat around in our bathing suits. Then we went in again with them. We only stayed in a little while this time. When we got dressed we had supper and then went riding up the beach. We went to the board walk and June and I had our first ride on a roller coaster. It certainly was fun. I never realized it was as scary as all that. We’re leaving for Washington tomorrow I think but this is certainly a wonderful place! We adopted a beautiful police dog that somebody left behind or lost. We just love him. They’re going to keep him ‘till they find his owner.
