August 31, 1932 - Wednesday

I didn’t sleep so terribly late this morning, altho’ I could have easy enough. I wrote to my family before lunch. George was down at the boats all day so I didn’t see him until about six thirty. We talked all evening.

This month has just dragged. It seems years ago that the dining room closed. It has been a slow month for business. I kept wondering how much more I will last up here. George is here ‘til. I kind of like to stay ‘till the 15th.

August 30, 1932 - Tuesday

I was on this morning and it was cold!! And I didn’t feel well. George was cold too. This afternoon I spent reading in front of the fire. I had fun when I was on from 7 to 9. George and I talked tonight.

August 29, 1932 - Monday

Got up at eight and ironed all morning and even then I didn’t get finished. It snowed this afternoon and it was plenty cold behind the counter. After supper George and I read until bedtime. Sleepy.

George's letter home:

‘Lo Mom,

Huzza, Huzza, how are things down in the low altitudes – Huh? Answer me that!

Things up here are just as lousy as ever. Right now, it is snowing and I am loafing in the lobby (Mr. Price is in Klamath Falls).

Saturday, Orin and I went for a hike on the Cascade Divide trail. My, we certainly passed through some beautiful country. Great forests, little open meadows filled with wild flowers, along tiny little springs, down steep canyons, until we finally ended on the highway. We flipped a coin and started hiking up the road to our left. About two miles of walking brought us to Anna Springs, the checking station you and Dad passed through from Medford. That meant we were six miles from home; and it was five o’clock, just a half hour from dinnertime. We were lucky though, and accepted a ride back.

Yesterday, Sunday, Anne and I went down to the lake right after lunch and remained there all day. We rode clear around the lake in the motor launch and had a little taste of sea life. There were three foot waves on the water; and the boat rocked and tossed around, throwing spray all over us. We got off on the island and climbed to the top. We came down in time to be picked up at five, and then we had to do more climbing to reach the rim. It was fun, and we both went to bed all tired out.

That is all for now. Thank you so much for removing me from the financial abyss.

Love, Brother

August 28, 1932 - Sunday

We certainly had a swell time this afternoon. It was our afternoon off so we set off about one o’clock down to the lake and took the long boat trip, got off at the island and climbed the crater. Dead tonight so early to bed.

August 27, 1932 - Saturday

I saw George for a little while this morning and I ate lunch with him and that’s all I have seen him all day. He went on a long hike this afternoon and went to bed after super. I’m going to bed early too. Washed this morning.

August 26, 1932 - Friday

I was on early this morning but there wasn’t any business and the morning was dull. This afternoon went down Annie Creek and slept in the sun. Found a lady spring we played with. Walk this evening after 7. It’s colder.
