I had my usual four classes in the morning and class took
the whole two hours this afternoon. I read when I finally got home. Went to
library tonight and met George then he walked home with me. I was certainly
glad to get back to school. It was a lucky break for me that I got a chance to
leave by the fifteenth instead of having to wait until the twentieth. And
George still likes me.

September 29, 1931 – Tuesday
My first class wasn’t until ten today so I got in ten hours
sleep last night. Went shopping and to
the dentist this afternoon. Then spent the evening studying. George didn’t call
as he said he would.

September 28, 1931 – Monday
So school has started again. I had 8, 9, 10 & eleven o’clocks.
Peggy is in all of them. Then I had a two o’clock. We had a long chapter
meeting. I am one of the two Jr. representatives in S.C. After chapter George came over until 9:30.

George's Letter Home:
Dear Mom,
This is rather a belated letter, but this week has been darn
full for all of us. We pledged twelve men, and they are the pick of the
freshmen. Every time I meet someone from another house; they remark about the
wonderful class we took in. It must be true; because they don’t admit a thing
like that very easily. We now have thirty boys; so our house bills should be
much lower.
We are moving tomorrow, and Howard is to be my roommate.
Tongue and I are the only ones Bill saw fit in the sophomore class to manage a
room. It is usually worked so an upper classman has a freshman, but there
aren’t enough. So Tom and I were selected too.
I went to classes today, and I can see where I will have to
do a lot of studying. My books are quite an item this year; ten dollars and
something.
Eddy and I are leaving Friday afternoon for home, and we are
bringing Ann Powell up with us. She is going to stay with one of her sisters in
Portland. I know you will like her mother; she is so sweet. Bob Trimm will be
with us too; but he is riding up with Don Thompson, one of our new boys.
I feel fine now except for my cold, and it is clearing up
just like it should.
It surely seems strange to be a sophomore, not half as much
fun as being a freshman. We just sit around and feel like a bunch of little old
men. Well that is the way it goes. Next year I will be an upper classman, which
will give me some authority around this place.
That is about all now. I received my laundry.

September 27, 1931 – Sunday
They woke us about nine thirty this morning and said the new
pledges were arriving. They moved in all day. George came over in the
afternoon. Tonight we went to Midway with about 10 other Alpha Phis and men.
Had a most wonderful time.

September 26, 1931 – Saturday
Tonight was a conference and rush week is over,
whoopee! We had tea to dinner but we
will have 9 pledges because a girl split preference. In the afternoon went for
a ride with George. He came over tonight and we talked until 11:30 – so to bed.
