Thursday, July 4, 1929, Ft. Washington, MD

Pop woke us up at six this morning because he wanted to be sure to be at Fort Washington by noon. We only had 130 miles to go and it didn’t take us long once we got started. All yesterday afternoon and this morning we kept passing thru the battle grounds of the Civil War! And this morning every few feet we would see a sign telling us all about what took place there. About ten or ten thirty we came to the church where Washington went. We went in and sat in his pew and got pictures and went on into Washington. There we inquired our way out to Fort Washington. On the way we went thru the capital grounds and saw the monument which was all quite thrilling. We got out to the Fort a little before noon. We had lunch with them and then Anna and I talked until about three and then we went swimming. When we got back supper was about ready. After that we went in to the city to see the fire works which was the only fourth of July spirit I felt all day long. It didn’t seem like a holiday. Happy reunion!

Jane's Notes: I don't know who they were visiting at Ft. Washington but I presume friends from Manila.
