February 28 & 29, 1931 - Saturday & Sunday

February 28, 1931 – Saturday

What a beautifully quiet day it has been, more than half the house went to Portland. And what gorgeous spring weather. I didn’t have to go to my 8 o’clock so I slept late then wasted all afternoon enjoying the weather.

February 29, 1931 – Sunday

We had four serenades last night and what a beautiful moonlight night it was, too. I slept until noon. I planed to study after dinner but I couldn’t get around to it so I have to make up now.

I’ve been so homesick all this month and I want to go home. There have been lots of dances and parties but I haven’t gone to any of them. Heck! Why is life like this?

February 27, 1931 – Friday

I didn’t get to bed until two this morning. I think the Freshmen stayed up all night. Say they had a swell time – I doubt it! They haven’t been so cocky today. After gym Betty M. & I went to see the studio plays.

February 26, 1931 – Thursday

We got the Freshmen up at six thirty to do house work because of their walk out last night. They tho’t they were getting off easy and were pretty cocky all day but about 11:30 pm we got them up to locked them in the pantry.

February 25, 1931 – Wednesday

Up until dinnertime this was just an ordinary day but at dinner the freshmen walked out. Afterwards I went to see “Twelfth Night”. The freshmen didn’t get back ‘til 12:30.

February 24, 1931 – Tuesday

I took advantage of its being Tuesday and slept until ten. After our lab Kate and Betty Zenner took Doro and I downtown and replated our pins. I didn’t go to Amplilian so we finished French.

February 23, 1931 – Monday

Today was gloomy and I was blue. After lunch I was reading an article for report writing and I fell asleep for about half an hour. Chapter meeting after dinner then I read Othello.

February 22, 1931 – Sunday

I’ve been so blue all day today. It certainly wouldn’t take much to make me cry. I slept until twelve as is my custom. Then Doro and I went to the show. Now I’m studying French.

February 21, 1931 – Saturday

The day of our formal and I haven’t been the least bit thrilled all day long. Five sisters are down for it and dozens of alums. The decorations were gorgeous, snowflakes. I didn’t have a particularly good time.

Jane’s Notes: In the scrapbook there is a pink snowflake shape with glitter on it and written next to it the words “The Formal, Feb. 21, 1931, I had Harry.”

Doro hasn’t been well today. She’s been in bed since noon. After lunch I was studying and I slept for about half an hour. After dinner had Doro down here listening to music. Freshmen gave sister feed.

I was going to get up early this morning but I just couldn’t make it. After lunch I went downtown with Betty McCracken. Then we studied awhile before dinner and so after dinner we finished early and to bed.

February 18, 1931 – Wednesday

It was so windy this morning early then about the middle of the morning it rained in torrents. I got three new magazines today and read from them all afternoon. Betao came over to dinner, had a good time. To bed early!

February 17, 1931 - Tuesday

In spite of my first class being an 11 o’clock I got up at 8. I was going to study but I got domestic and sewed on buttons. We only had to stay in lab 1½ hours this afternoon. Studied before and after dinner.

Hello Folks,

The weather is sloppy and rainy and wet and damp here all wrapped up in a delightfully cold wind. Barnes and I found a heck of a good value downtown at the J.C. Penny Company. Sheepskin coats for four dollars. Everybody around the Lodge has been paying seven and ten dollars for them and these are just like theirs. If you can spare the money, I surely would like to have one.

One hears that there are only four more insurance policies to be sold now, before they start building our new Lodge. Oh Boy!

Thursday night we are having the Delta Gammas over for dinner, and that is about the extent of our social activities this week.

I have an accounting lab this afternoon from three to five and then I will be free for the day.

Bob O’Melveny is sick in the infirmary. Gee if many more gents get sick, we won’t have anybody left here.

I wish you could send me some stamps too!

Love, George

February 16, 1931 – Monday

I’m just more than resting eight and a half hours last night. Played around after lunch until gym. Jeanne and I were going to show but there wasn’t a matinee so we went after dinner. Good!

February 15, 1931 – Sunday

That’s a record. I slept 13½ hours last night. I didn’t get up until noon. Sunday lunch was swell! I studied after lunch. Listened to radio a while at tea time then studied again. Early bed.

February 14, 1931 – Saturday

I was so tired all day today. I don’t think I’ve been to bed before twelve twice this week. After lunch Doro and I washed our heads. Played all afternoon and horsed after dinner but to bed early 10:30! (drawn heart with words “from Steve” in margin).

Jane’s Notes: Empty florist envelope in the scrapbook from Steve.

Letter from George to his parents:

February 14, 1931

Dear Folks,

You can well see that I am still studying my accounting. Sometimes I feel like giving up the sponge, but then that isn’t the way to get along in this world. Bill Preble had to withdraw from school because of his health. Jene Grady is house manager now, and I am his assistant. That is practically an assurance of the house manager position during my junior year. Boy, it brings in thirty-five hunks of gold a month; and you know how welcome that is going to be.

The frosh swimming team met the Oregon State Rooks; just took them like Grant took Richmond. Tonight the varsity teams from the two schools meet here, and I hope to see Carl Johnson swim.

Yesterday was so warm that Ed Field, George Rischmuller, and I took the top down on Eddie’s car; and drove about forty-five miles up the McKenzie Highway. Gee it was great, we sang all the way up and just had one heck of a good time. Ed’s sister lives in Baker, Oregon, and he wants me to drive up there with him spring vacation. I wish you would write and let me know what you feel about it.

I have been working around here all day today and I found an old rug downstairs and cleaned it all up. It is in the room now, and nearly all the floor is covered up. There is nothing like a rug to create a homey atmosphere.

My detail this week is that universally detested wakeup. I arise early in the morning and juggle wood around in the darn furnace. It is about the most rotten one on earth; smoke pours out and makes your eyes burn and aggravates your temper.

The weather turned wet last night, but today has been wonderful. All the boys were out playing catch; I wish you would send my mite and ball down to me.

I still have this darned cold, and maybe it isn’t getting tiresome. Cough, cough, cough; blow, blow, blow, all day and night long until I think I will go nuts.

You had better call Margaret and tell her what the compact is; because Ruth wrote me about it. I don’t want the girl to think that I hocked it.

June Bryant sent me a valentine.

News is out and the dinner bell is bonging; so accept my fond farewell from your youngest and oldest.

Love, George.

February 13, 1931 – Friday

I certainly was tired this morning and still am just dead. After lunch tried to study. Test at gym. I’m part of the decorations for the Senior Ball. I wish I were going. Studied French ‘till 12:30.

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

February 12, 1931 – Thursday

Didn’t have a class ‘til 11 but got up at seven anyway. After lunch I had the whole afternoon and I enjoyed it! Gamma Phi’s (1/2 of them) came over to dinner. At 11 just the sophomores had a feed. It’s 3:30 am now!!

February 11, 1931 – Wednesday

I tho’t I knew a little about French today. After studying so hard on Psych we didn’t have test. Except for my gym class played all afternoon. After dinner went to Play. Swallowed my pride, asked Harry to formal.

Letter from George to his parents:

February 11, 1931

Dear Folks,

Thank you so much for my money; it seems to be necessary to get along down here. Here is a resume of my grades, this mid-term:

                                                            Hours              Credits                        Points
Gym                                                    1                          II                                    4
Military                                                2                           I                                   10
Social Science                                     3                          II                                   12
Reflective Thinking                             3                         III                                    9
Physical Sciences                                4                          II                                   16
Accounting                                          4                         IV                                    8
Total                                                   17                        14                                   59

This term’s accounting has been troubling me quite a bit as you can see by that dog-gone four I pulled own. It is a real low four at that, one point lower and I would have had a five. My prof. told me I would certainly have to step on it in order to drag it up to a three. I am surely going to try, but this course certainly has me buffaloed this term.

The registrar’s office issued the grade standings of the different fraternities and sororities last Monday. What do you think --- The good old Lodge is first men’s fraternity on the campus with an average of 46.855. Mrs. Bryant told me we weren’t getting our new Lodge because of our rotten grades down here. She ought to put this in her pipe and smoke it, and don’t think I am going to fail in telling her about the grade average either.

Well I must get to my accounting now; it is about all I do now.

Love, George
