Tuesday, July 9, 1939, Ft. Washington, MD

Well we stayed over tonight. We were going back with Clare but we decided to stay over one more night. Anna gave a bridge luncheon for Lucile and I. After we dressed and had breakfast. We helped with the preparations until it was time to dress. This morning the electricity was still off and because so many things depended on that there certainly was some bustling around here. Just as I got dressed the first guest arrived and Anna wasn’t ready so I went down to receive them. At twelve all the girls got there and we started playing bridge. There were three tables and we progressed. We stayed until one thirty and then had a gorgeous lunch beautifully served. After lunch we drove the girls from town around the fort. They had to catch the three thirty boat. Anna Louise, Lucile and I went with them just for the ride. When we got to the War College where the boats were, we got off long enough to get some cones and while we were gone it started to rain and we were drenched before we could get back to the boat so we went into the ladies room and took off our dresses and let them dry. Tonight after supper all us kids went to the show. Then I packed, now to bed!

Jane’s Notes: Mom’s scrapbook has a bridge tally card from the party. It also has a telegram dated July 9 which reads: "Annapolis MD Captain Bonnoer . Please tell Annabelle bring bathing suit period Expect Powells have lunch with me Friday Noon Carvel Hall Regards Steve."
