My first day of freedom from school was spent in absolute idleness. I did nothing but try on dresses all day. This morning I was wondering what I was going to wear to Helen’s party when Mrs. Miller pops in with a beautiful beaded dress that was too small for her and she wondered if it could be fitted for me. All comes to those who wait. It was fixed and it was lovely. A beautiful shade of green. In the afternoon I slept and took a bath and rested again. I did nothing but rest all day. At seven fifteen I started to dress for dinner. Dick is a salesman now so he came for me in a car that he drives himself. We were the last ones there. There were six couples. It was a lovely dinner and it was heaps of fun, very informal. After coffee we went to theHotel. The orchestra off the boat was there for three dances but they weren’t so hot. We closed the place up. We took Alex and Helen home but first we drove around and sang for most of an hour. I got home about three fifteen. I’ve got two dates for Thursday and Saturday.

Jane’s Notes: In the scrapbook I found this newspaper clipping: “Miss Lucy and Helen Morton entertained at a dinner on Tuesday night honoring Miss Annabel Powell who will go to the States soon with her parents. She will enter college at Eugene, Oregon, in the autumn.” In addition to these diaries and the scrapbook I inherited the contents of Mom's Hope Chest, a beautiful carved camphor wood chest which I have displayed in my front hall. There were lots of cloths from her Philippine days and I have that beautiful green beaded dress. Definitely a flapper era 1920's style.
