Sunday night
Darling,
The forest fires are getting worse and worse and they can’t
control them. This terrible one near Forest Grove threatened Tillamook! Last
night there was so much smoke that it was like a fog. This evening it got
worse. It’s so heavy that you can’t see more than a block and a half and when
we were coming over the bridge we couldn’t even see the water. It smarts your
eyes when you are outside. They say it’s about the worst one they have ever
had. One lumber company has already had enough lumber burnt to keep them
running for twenty five years! But then I suppose you have already read about
it in the papers back there.
We listened to the N.R.A. program tonight down in the
Bowman’s living room. Mrs. Bowman asked us where my beau was? I guess she
wondered if we had had a fight or something. I wonder if you were listening. I
tho’t it was an awfully good program. I tho’t of you, dear, and hoped that you
were listening, too.
Today we went on a picnic with the Wylies to Lake Oswego.
They are certainly very very swell to us. But tomorrow we have to get
everything packed before we go out to dinner at Mrs. Meyers. Everybody has been
so good to us while we have been in Portland, particularly your family.
Lover, I miss you so. I’m glad to get going because I’m
tired of waiting around but I get a sort of scary feeling in my heart at
leaving Portland.
