George had to go up to Hood River to see about some Rushees
and he would have to go this day of all days. This has been such a perfect
& happy year!
Note: Looking back through the diary I realize that their
first kiss probably happened on this day in 1931. In 1932 she declared August
14th as their anniversary.

Hello Darling:
Well the first day without you was very lonely but I will
get used to it again. We took the Powell’s home, or rather Ralph and Lid took
them home about 11 o’clock. Ann gathered all of her books out of the shelves
and Dad and I are going to take them over to her in a few minutes. I think Mrs.
Powell will be leaving Thursday morning but I don’t know about the girls.
Perhaps I will hear tonight. They are invited over to Aunt Lid’s Wednesday
night and we also.
It was dreadfully hot today and I thought of you many times
and hoping it will not be too hot for you. I am enclosing a letter from the
home office, and I notice one on the desk here, which you had already received
but will forward this anyway. I received a letter from Grandmother today and
she is wondering about you also. She enclosed a dollar bill for me but I am
going to return it. She said she and Grandad were actually uncomfortable.
Sunday it was so hot and Grandad had gone over town and was so all in when he
got back he had to lie down. I will write you often dear. Dad is talking some
of going to Bend this week but I don’t know for sure or whether he will take me
or what but you just keep on mailing your cards here and I will get them.
Remember me to the Wells family and much love and kisses for
you dear.
Love Mother
Dad sends you love. He is doing the dishes.
