George darling,
You remember last night I said that I was going to get a
letter from Chicago today? Well it didn’t come! Not even one of those darn
little post cards, you can’t see me so I will have to tell you that I am
tapping my foot and I have a great big frown on my forehead. O, I wish I could
cry on your shoulder. I wouldn’t even mind if you teased me terribly if you
were only here to tease me. I love you.
I spent most of the afternoon with Doro and Jean. June and I
went down to Broadway and marketed in the morning. In the afternoon Doro and
Jean came by and picked me up to go and call on Adele (Jean has a car. It is a
model T coupe). We stayed and visited with Adele for awhile and then it was so
hot that we wanted to go swimming so we came back, picked up June and our suits
and went out to Lake Oswego. I tho’t it was awfully nice of Doro and Jean to
take us. We went to an Alpha Phi Alums house. She has asked us out there many
times so we tho’t we would take her up on her invitation. She has a darling
home. The funny part about it was that they were having an Alpha Phi rushing
party out there, so we rushed Jean. He was embarrassed at first but they were
just getting out when we got here so it wasn’t so bad. We had a wonderful swim.
The water was so caressingly cool (if you know what I mean) and it was such a
hot day. June sat on my lap going out and I tho’t I would suffocate going out
there and June’s no light weight either. She has gained fifteen pounds since
she has been here.
George, I think Jean and Doro are really in love now. They
seem to be getting more so every time I see them together. You know how people
in love look at the other one when they have made a statement. They do that and
I don’t remember anything like that down at school. And here is a secret,
promise you won’t even tell Jim? Cross your heart? And when you come back to
Portland and find out you must be very surprised even if Jean tells you. Jean
is going to order a sweetheart badge for Doro. Now don’t groan because it
really is swell. And please, please don’t tell because I promised I wouldn’t
even tell you but darling how can I help it? You would probably read my mind
anyway. Besides I’ not telling you. I’m just thinking on paper and you’re there
to read it.
The time is getting shorter and shorter now. It is only five
days. Friday we go to Dorothy’s to lunch and Sunday for a picnic with the
Wylies. We have to give the apartment a thorough cleaning before we leave. With
packing, too, we will have plenty to do in the next five days.
That swim must have made me sleepy. My mistakes are getting
worse and worse. I miss you, lover and I love you.
Annie
