January 19, 1932 - Tuesday

I have been miserable all day long. I went to my eleven o’clock and managed to stick it out ‘till about two, and then I went to bed. At about five I came in my room and studied until ten. So to bed.

George's letter home:

Dear Mom,

I have had a lot of fun today; about six of us rented bicycles and rode clear out to Springfield and back. It was about ten miles all together, and we only had to pay fifteen cents apiece. After that we all wandered around town and I finally wound up in the gym. The work out I had there in fencing just about ruined me. Not quite, though, for I am going to the basketball game this evening.

Last night I studied until one o’clock in the morning; you would think by that, that I am becoming a student of the very best type. However that was just a result of initiation week. I had to stay up so long during that week that I got behind in my work, but it is just about all caught up now. It surely takes a long time to put eleven men through that ordeal. Eddy is wearing my badge until his comes; I never have seen such a happy boy in all my life. Mr. Kollock was here to conduct the ritual for us, and he was very fine. Just think, Mother, he hasn’t looked at that ritual since his college days and he gave it completely from memory without a single mistake.

Anne (sic) is sick in bed today; but I think she will be alright tomorrow. At least I hope so; I don’t like my little friend to feel ill at all.

That is all, except that I need some toothpaste real badly.

I will not be home this term at all, as I have too many Saturday classes; but there is nothing to prevent you and Dad from coming down here for a little visit some one of these Sundays.

Bye, say hello to Dad for me.

Love, Brother
