July 31, 1931 - Friday

Doro and I got ambitious and went down to the lake this afternoon. We had plenty of time so we stayed down half an hour. George and Fred Ahern were down there. Well this will be a month to remember. My first month of honest labor for money. Even if it is just as a chamber maid. Boy I sure can make beds.

Jane's Notes: Fred Ahern, a familiar name and another life long friend.

A letter post marked July 31, 1931, Medford, Oregon

Addressed to: Joug Lavender Hibblerd, Crater Lake Lodge, Crater Lake, Oregon

Cartoon drawing at the top of six figures hanging off of a car. Caption: Barnes Arrives with a few close friends. Note new Rolls Royce. Accommodations must be first class.  I have forgotten but will try to find out by the time that I write another letter.

Dear Joug:

Your private messenger, alais, bubbie the Sleeeetrrr, delivered a proculmatum to the effect that my presence at the lake was indispensiable and I, realizing your sorry plight, have decided to pay you a short visit for a couple or three weeks. I intend to make this a combination pleasure and business trip. I find that in looking over my books that one of the lake’s employees has an outstanding debt of one dollar and eighteen cents payable on or before December 1, 1930. Due to the extreme difficulty expierenced by this department in trying to negociate with this party by mail I have decided that a personal visit is most likely to be effective as I intend to get a photographic evidence of the vices of said debtor and upon securing said evidence intend to forward I immediately to certain Portland addresses unless prompt payment of one eighteen and cost are presented.

Should I wear my new Tux or just a simple old full dress? You see I haven’t been around a bunch of lumber jack bums since I left the lodge and am not accustomed to their habits and idiocincrecies (pronounce it and you will know what I mean). I am sorry to find; that is I am realy very, wery, wery, wery, perturbed to discover or find to my unter disipointment that without the slightest effort on my part and without the least knowledge, that this here paper I ge-finished. Hut duwg.

C. D. Barnes

Jane's notes: All spellings authentic to the letter.
