December 7, 1932 - Wednesday

I went downtown with George today. I had some errands to do. Christmas shopping, etc. Studied some this afternoon. George came over to study tonight but he was too dead so we talked instead.

George's letter home:

Dear Family,

I received my check this morning, and I thank you very much for it. I shall certainly manage to hold some of it out for a ticket home and back. I also received my laundry bag this morning, and the sweets within it were gratefully received by everyone around here as well as me.

I have discovered that there has been a secret letter writing epidemic going on behind my back by a certain young lady and a certain sweet mother. Try as I do, I am unable to discover the contents of the letters, and my curiosity grows day by day. Maybe they will be so kind as to let me in on the great and dark secret one of these days.

Ann is coming to Portland for New Years Eve, and we are going back on the train together. Through action taken by the Sate Board of Higher Education yesterday, we will not have to return to school until the third of January. That gives us still another day of grace.

Life down here is becoming very busy and a trifle monotonous. Nearly everyone is trying to bring these grades up as high as possible before the examinations start. Stan and I each had our final examination in Military today, and we each received an “A” on it. That will not mean an “A” in the course, necessarily. They average our work on the drill field in on that too. It will be doubly hard on me, for I must close my books for the month this weekend. I think that I will not have too much trouble, though; for my work is not too far behind at all like some of the others is.

I must go up to the library now; I thought that I would drop you a letter now when I have time rather than not finding any in the middle of the week. If you do not hear from me again, I shall be home sometime Saturday, but I do not know when as yet.

Love, Brother
