Dearest George,
Someone is always sitting at the desk in the Lounge Car so I
will have to try my best with a magazine on my knees. I wish that I might say
good night to you tonight but I can’t so I did the next best and sent you a
telegram from Klamath Falls. While I was in the station I saw one of the
rangers and his wife from the lake. I found some people to talk to. Two Kappa
and a Gamma Phi. One of the Kappas is sleeping above me and you should hear her
talk. She gives me a pain. I can hear you chuckling because I am starting to
talk about someone but I think it would amuse you. She sat down beside me
determined to make an impression on me. I sensed that right away so I decided
to answer he in her own tongue. She said she was going to San Francisco then
paused while I was impressed so I said well I was going to Los Angeles. She
tho’t “M-m-m, I can’t let her get ahead of me” so her next remark was I wish I
could go home expecting me to say “Where do you live?” So I asked. She said
“New York” another pause. Then I said I wish I could go home too.” Pause “where
do you live” “Philippine Islands.” Pause, smile, raising of eyebrows. She is
everything that I have tried not to be but she doesn’t bother me. We were out on the observation car awhile ago
and it was snowing. It was such a relief from the stuffy old car and so much
fun standing out there. There is a lot of snow at Klamath Falls but not as much
as there was when I went down last Christmas. Maud Sutton is very aloof. She
notices us but that’s all. We are college girls but she is a woman of the
world. You know one of the Suttons of San Francisco. Tut, tut, now I am getting
catty and you are disapproving but I don’t mean anything by it. O, I dread that
train ride tomorrow. It is going to be so long and dull. I wont’ have anyone to
talk to then. I wish I would be on the train to Portland instead. I would love
it! Did you take a peek or were you a good boy and took that package home to
your mother as I told you to? The conductor got off the train at one of the
little mountain stops and brought me in a piece of mistletoe. I wish you were
here so that I might use it. I love you, dear, and I miss you. It is going to
be a long fifteen days and the ride back is going to be almost unbearable from
excitement. O, I hope the time goes quickly.
Love, Annie
P.S. I found my pen at the bottom of my purse. Wish this
were a better letter
