December 23, 1932 - Friday

My but it’s late. Two o’clock. Ever since after dinner we have been working on decorations and packages. This morning I went into Los Angeles with Mrs. Williams on an errand.

Dearest George,

Well, I managed to get back from the wilds of the big city safely but it is small wonder that I am still alive. The hurry and bustle of it all actually made me dizzy (or else I had my hat on too tight). But when you don’t know where you are going and everyone around you is tearing madly from one place to another it is rather confusing. The stores were just jammed with people doing last minute shopping.

We went downtown right after lunch. On the way downtown we picked up Mrs. Edwards, one of the most charming women I have ever met. She is beautiful as well as easy to talk to. She is the teacher of speech here at the school. Mrs. Edwards and I left Mrs. Williams soon after we got downtown and didn’t meet her again until about 5:30. We shopped around until we met Mrs. Williams again. Mrs. Edwards had odds and ends of her Christmas shopping to do. About three thirty we stopped in and had some tea only mine was orange juice. During the course of our shopping I got into a bookstore and as usual I couldn’t get away without a book. It is a beautiful one. I’ll show it to you sometime after the evening of the 31st. At about five thirty we met Mrs. Williams and went to get some supper. And then came home but at that it was seven thirty before we got here. It is a long way between Pasadena and Los Angeles.

Oh, my sweet heart, I miss you so and I am looking forward so to the time when we will meet again. I am ready to come home right now. I am satisfied that Eleanor is well and happy. It is going to be hard to leave Eleanor though. She is always so sad when I do.

The mad scramble of Los Angeles was too much for me dear. I have t go to bed. Good night sweetheart.

Friday morning

Haven’t time to add any more dear. We’re going in town and I will have a chance to mail it. Oceans of love,

Ann

Dear Ann,

Your card came yesterday afternoon – it was dear of you to remember me amid all the excitement of California. Thanks so much!

Was the Chi Psi Dance ever very grand! Imagine having two orchestras, perfect food, and oh well – it’s hard to write about. I’ll describe every little bit of it when I see you. There were six Alpha Phi’s there. I believe Mar L. Eccles and Fay Bayer + the four from the house.

And my dear! Dorothy Cunningham has a Chi Psi Badge! She was thrilled speechless last night and Bob was so pleased and beamed at everyone. It seems to me that Alpha Phi’s have a corner on sweet heart badges.

We came home about 2:30 – as a result I’ve been a bit groggy today. Jean hasn’t called yet so I don’t know how he feels.

Oh! You remember I said I was a little afraid of meeting Bill Orinduff for some reason or other? Well, I’ve not seen him yet but he’s going to church with us Christmas Eve. Isn’t that annoying? Somehow or other I haven’t been quite so nervous about him since Jean told me that he (Bill) used to go with Anna Pauline Rea – that Alpha Chi O – you know anyone that would go with her couldn’t be very scary.

Last night at the dance I talked to Mrs. Labbe for quite a while. She mentioned particularly how much she liked George Hibbard – “such a fine young boy” where upon I informed her that he too was going with an Alpha Phi. That woman is a dear but seems to have Kappa on the brain – after we finished talking she at least knew that the Alpha Phi’s existed!

Jean sent me a darling corsage last night too, Annie. Wasn’t that sweet? It worries me to think how much the whole thing must have cost tho’ – It’s a good thing the Gamma Alpha Chi dance comes next term – otherwise we’d not go out at all. We don’t mind tho’ – last night was worth it.

No one has received his grades as yet. It’s probably just as well – we can at least enjoy Christmas. And you having a duplicate of yours sent down there! From what I hear around here only about two of our Freshmen have any hopes of making their house grades.

We’re going out to the “Leap Year Dance” – the one Beth and Evie are giving. It’s to be out at Waverly. I think, - and almost everyone I know is going.

Do write if you have any spare time – I can imagine how busy you are, tho’. If anything exciting happens I’ll write whether you do or not.

Merry Christmas! And Happy New Year!

Love, Doro
