May 30, 1932 - Monday

It was like having two Sundays in a row. I cleaned my room, made my bed, and bathed before dinner at one (being Memorial Day). At two George and I went to a show. We studied ‘til 5, had tea, then studied until it was too dark to read.

George's letter home:

Dear Mother,

I am sorry that I couldn’t get home this weekend, but things just didn’t click right here. It is just as well that I didn’t too; because Jean was away and it was thus my duty to stay here and look after things for him.

My picnic was alright except for the rain which just pelted down in torrents. It had rained for a week up at the picnic, but that didn’t make any difference --- it just continued to rain. We danced and had refreshments, though, and everything turned out alright. Jimmy Ferguson and I went together. He took an Alpha Phi too, so that made it quite a congenial party. He had borrowed an old Ford roadster, and we had a great time getting there in it. We ran out of gas when we had almost reached the picnic grounds; so out we all piled and proceeded to push the infernal creation to the destination. The girls were worn out, and Jim and I weren’t in such good condition ourselves. By the time we arrived, we were so soaked, that we got a little gas and drove right back to town. After changing our clothes, we ate dinner at the Anchorage (one of these great big nice old t-bone steak dinners) and then went out to the picnic again.

This place was nearly deserted this weekend. There were only five of us left, and it seemed rather good not to have so many people around one for a change.

Tell Dad that I certainly appreciate his little contribution. I spent it all on Anne as he instructed. In fact that is nearly where all my money goes, but I enjoy it too ---- so why not? I don’t think you will have to send me any more money this term. In fact I should come home a very wealthy gent. However, my expectations may not be fulfilled, and I may be forced to send another one of those little letters for a piece of change.

That is about all the news, I am sorry that I didn’t write last week, but I really had so much to do, that there wasn’t enough time to go around. There were lots of things left unfinished.

Love to you all, Brother

Lousy typing ---

Jane’s Notes: I’ll say. I had to do a lot of editing in transcribing this letter.
