January 20, 1931 – Tuesday


Slept ten or eleven hours but I’m so far behind that it doesn’t seem to do much good. Sophomores are going to have a blind date dinner. Harry called this afternoon.


January 20, 1931

Dear Mom,

We each made out a menu here for breakfast lunch and dinner which is to be followed. My menu is going to be followed Friday or Saturday and Fannie doesn’t have the recipe for “Sailor’s Duff” pudding. I wish you would send it right away so she could have it by then.

Nothing new has happened – so good-bye.

Jane's Notes: Sailor's Duff was a favorite dessert of Dad's that his mother made. Mother made it faithfully. I don't seem to have a copy of the recipe. Maybe someone else in the family does. Fannie must be the cook at the Chi Psi Lodge.

  1. Was sailor's duff a steamed pudding similar to plum duff? If you locate the recipe, I would love to have it.

  2. I've looked in my recipe box and I do have it. It is steamed.

    Mix 1 egg, 2 tbl. sugar, 1/2 c. molasses, 3 tbl. butter. Add & mix 1/2 c. boiling water, 1 round tsp baking soda, 1 1/2 c. flour.

    Fill custard cups 3/4 full, cover with foil. Steam in covered pan with rack in the bottom of the oven for 1 hour. (it doesn't give the temperature).

    Sauce: 3 egg yolks, beaten. Add enough powdered sugar to make hard sauce (aprox. 1 1/2 c.) then when ready to serve add 1/2 pt. whipped cream and 1 tsp. vanilla
