November 7, 1931 - Saturday

What a student I turned out to be! I slept until eleven thirty this morning but this afternoon I studied four hours without a break. George came over for an hour after dinner. Now to be at 10 o’clock!

George's letter home:

Dear Mother,

It started to rain last evening and it is still doing that little thing. I had to walk to the Alpha Phi house for their pledge dance, and old joke just did me all kinds of wet tricks. The Alpha Phis must have thought a drowned rat had invaded their home.

The dance was certainly a nice one; I don’t know when I have had a more enjoyable time. Ann was dressed in a green flowered formal; just the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. In the middle of the dance we all went upstairs and ate in our partner’s room. Girls surely have things decorated nicely, don’t they? My room looked like the abode of a bum after being in theirs. That is just the difference between a boy and a girl, I guess.

All of my mid-term grades are in now, and I am quite disgusted with myself. My trouble can’t be traced to a girl, because I don’t spend enough time with one. I read all my assignments, but they just seem like so many words to me; I have to waste all kinds of time reading things over again. Well, maybe I will snap out of it soon; I had better do it before it is too late though.

Thank Dad for the shaving brush he sent me; I could use some razor blades too. I ran out some time ago, but haven’t remembered to tell you before now.

I hope we can go to Bend; it would do one good to get away from everyone. I know for a few days at least.

Love, George
