We only had nine and a half rooms apiece so we finished
before noon. While I was on duty I sunbathed, read and wrote three letters. I
got three too. I went to dance with George. Moonlight!

George's Letter Home:
Dear Mother,
Thank you so much for the Parka; it fits just fine and will
come in very handy soon. Today was pay day; so I am sending my little dab home
to be stowed away.
I had a little diversion in the way of work today. I worked
with Case on the cabins in the morning. This afternoon found me back with my
old pal Lewis though. Since the dining room closed our work has been very
light, so I have taken my father’s advice: find something to do. Gee I have
scrubbed all the garbage cans until they shine like diamonds, racked all the
rushes away from around the cafeteria and burned it. Straightened the vegetable
room around every day, etc. Lewis and I have been transformed in real mechanics
here lately. The Ford just stopped all together. So we were forced to fix it.
We ground the vales, tightened the bearings, fixed the tires, put new wiring
all over the thing and greased it all up. If your equipment won’t work up here
you either repair it or use wheelbarrows. On top of all that the powerhouse
engine gave out and we were the two kids who had to help fix it. We worked
three days on it, and if we didn’t know anything about it before, we can tell
anybody how electricity is made now.
I will be glad to get home again, but I regret that I can’t
stay any longer than one day. That day will no doubt be a busy one too. Ho-hum,
it seems that I won’t see much of my home in the next few years, but my
thoughts will always be there.
Love, George
