January 3, 1933 - Tuesday

Doro slept with me last night. We went to bed late and talked until five in the morning. Have been dead all day. Registered in the morning and went downtown in the afternoon. Flooded basement, furnace on the blink, cold!! George came over tonight.

George's Letter Home:

Dear Family,

It is a good thing that you did not wait for us at the station, the train did not leave until seven-fifteen. It was a very enjoyable ride, however. It was full of kids from school; with ten cars, you can imagine how many students there were. Just about everyone we knew was on it, and it was lots of fun. It arrived in Eugene about eleven, and then we had the darndest time getting a ride home. All the taxis were full. Eventually, the two little waifs found a corner way in the back of one of those awful busses. It nearly took a can opener to get us out of the thing.

This morning, I arose early and registered by none-thirty. That is record time, when you stop to consider all the red tape one must go through. After that, I stopped down by the Coop to see about a job during the rush. But they are not expecting a rush this term. In fact, they do not think they are going to sell hardly any textbooks. At least, I got the manager to go against his policy and extend my payment on my books a couple of weeks. I will get them in the next few days and then I shall tell you how much they are. I also put the house bills out this morning, and I will have to have $6.70 for it. If it will help any, I will not have to have that before about the twentieth or even the twenty-fifth.

There was a letter waiting me from the national office when I returned, and it was very complimentary to my work. It made me feel pretty fine, to think that I really am succeeding in this job. It really is the first I have had where I have had a free hand in receiving and spending money. It certainly is fine experience, and I am making the most of my opportunity.

All the houses down here are having a terrible time. Their basements are flooded and they cannot build fires. The Alpha Phis cannot even get to their furnace room, it is that high. We are very seriously considering building an ark or a raft to make ours more accessible.  The water is just two inches below the water line, so we can at least have a fire. Maybe we can float a bond issue now for a new house.

That is all the news right now, I just wanted you to know that we arrived safely and that we are well.

Love, Brother
