George left for Medford this morning. It’s been a long day
without him. We went for a long ride after the bus left, got home at 12:30.
Took a nap after lunch. After dinner we went to a show. Wrote.
A few of Ann's letters to George survived from this period.

Dearest George,
It certainly seems ages since you left this morning. I have
been with your family all day and they certainly miss you too. I feel a little
guilty about going up to the Cunningham’s house tomorrow night because, I
think, I help a little bit to fill up the gap. Dorothy asked me to stay two
nights but I think, I will only stay one. We have had a nice day, a Sunday day,
almost like the kind our family have at home. After you left we went for a long
ride thru the most beautiful country, lots of trees, rivers and hills. Most of
the time we all three rode in the front seat because the back seat seemed kind
of lonesome with you gone. We didn’t get home from our ride until about 12:30.
Your father and I were pretty sleepy from getting up so early so after lunch we
each took naps and your mother sat in the front porch and read the papers. It
turned out to be a hot day here. Did you get warm? About six o’clock we had
dinner and then we went to a show. I like going over to the neighborhood
theatre with your mother and father.
Your father confessed to me this afternoon that you were
really too strong for him to take on and that he was really going to vote
against the consolidation if it was put on the ballot, that he was only trying
to get you going and he guessed he had gotten us both going.
I miss you dear, so much.
Love, Ann
Jane's Notes: the consolidation was the notion that, to save money during the depression, the state was considering consolidating the University of Oregon and Oregon State College in Corvallis. It never came up for a vote.
