April 18, 1932 - Monday

I certainly did some memorizing before my two o’clock today but it didn’t do me any good. When I got home George came over and we went downtown. He stayed ‘til 5:30. After chapter meeting went to love and marriage lecture.

George's letter home:

Dear Mother,

My poor roommate is having a hard time of it. His poison oak has turned into a secondary infection, and he is to be in the infirmary for at least another week. The poor kid is so tired of just lying there on his back that it is a pity to see him.

Howard is withdrawing from school today; he hasn’t enough money to finish and he doesn’t know where he can obtain anymore. He is so far in debt now that he feels that he shouldn’t borrow more too.

Jean and I went to the Alpha Phi house for tea last evening and then came home for something to eat. I don’t know if these sororities labor under the illusion that they fill us up on Sundays or not, but the fact remains that we are always hungry afterwards. I studied six hours yesterday, so my time was not wasted at all. Last night I was so tired from this strenuous weekend that I went to bed really early. During the course of the night I had a terrible dream ------ I was being chase by a bunch of people who had the express purpose of killing me. Oh I assure you it was quite real; and just as I had myself safely hid, one of them found me and started to deal with me in a most ruthless manner. Struggle, oh boy, that is no name for it. I fought harder than I even imagined I was capable of doing. In the course of the struggle I woke up, and who should I have mauled all over the place but young Field of Sheridan. The poor little gent was on his way to bed, when he noticed that most of the covers were off of me. He stooped down to put them over me, and I just hit him like a thunderbolt. He was so startled that he let out a great big yell and started to wake me up. I guess he though I had gone crazy or something.

My fees this term amount to $11.75, and they must be paid by Saturday the 23rd. I think I can get along with nothing more for the rest of the month if I try.

I will write you later on in the week and tell you of any more news that happen to arrive.

Love, Brother

P.S. Howard just rolled in and says he is going to remain here after all. The University is going to lend him enough to finish the term – not bad.  GLH
