March 28, 1932 - Monday

I was all registered by nine thirty. I’m taking the same courses. George walked home with me. I’m going back to the lake. I got a letter. Went shopping this afternoon. After supper Chapter meeting and installation. Mr. Hibbard was in town. Three of us went to a show.

Ann's thank you letter:

Dear Mrs. Hibbard,

That vacation in Portland with you was one of the most enjoyable I have ever spent and I can’t tell you how I appreciate it. I just love to stay with you and I only hope I didn’t inconvenience you.  I sent some sweet peas, today, I hope you like sweet peas. They are my mother’s favorite flower and that’s why I sent them.

It was certainly a surprise this evening to see Mr. Hibbard when George came after me to take me to a show. As we started out the door he said “Well, I managed to rate a car for this evening.” I didn’t know what he was talking about. Then I noticed that the car we were walking towards had a familiar look and then Mr. Hibbard stepped out of it. We all went down to the show. We saw a good show but Mr. Hibbard said it was too serious for him. There was a good Mickey Mouse comedy however and that saved the show. We went into Lee Dukes afterwards for some ice cream.

We arrived in Eugene safely about ten thirty or ten on Sunday night. When we first left Portland the roads were rather skiddy but by the time we got to Salem they were dry and there wasn’t any water on the road at all. When we got to the house there was a whole stack of mail waiting for me. Most of them were from the family. One was from Mr. Price saying that I might go back to the “lake” this summer which of course was very pleasant news for me. My mother said when she was writing to me all the orchids in the yard and on the porch were in bloom and they scented up the whole atmosphere. She was sending some special delivery to my sister.

Thank you again and again for asking me to stay with you.

Love, Ann Powell

George's letter home:

Dear Mother,

I was up bright and early this morning and all registered by nine o’clock --- quite a record.

Our trip down here was very uneventful and thus very safe. Howard and I traded off in the rumble seat, and it certainly was a cold ride. Most of the boys were here when we arrived, and they were all bustling around shaking hands, fixing rooms up, and all the other signs of returning activity. My roommate is to be Chuck McCormack, one of the boys who has failed to make his grades as yet. This is one term that he will make them though, for I am surely going to see that he studies.

From all indications, our grades will not be as good as they were heretofore; but there is another term coming up now which should show up much better.

That is just about all right now; I just wanted to let you know of my safe arrival. Anne and I certainly had a wonderful time with you and Dad; and I can’t thank you enough for letting me have her with us for the vacation.

Love, George
