TO GLH – Portland
FROM AEP – Berkeley
Sunday
George darling,
This afternoon and evening I have been out with Tom Moran
and I had such a good time. I must deliver my message first. Tom says hello and
to say hello to Jean, too. He says he has started dozens of times to write to
you and he knows he owes you a letter. He took me for a ride and he came after
me about four thirty. We rode in the rumble of his “best friend since high
school’s” car with his friend and girl friend in the front, both very nice
people. We went to a place called “Diablo Country Club”. It is on the other
side of the mountain range and takes about an hour to go out there. It was a
very lovely place. This friend’s (I think his name is Ike Clay) mother was out
there and we went out after her. We came back to their house and his mother
invited us all in to a very delightful supper! All these people were just
lovely. The girl I gathered was a senior at Cal. The mother was white haired
and very jolly. Tom and this boy have just been on a very interesting trip down
thru the southern states. It seems that they have gone on a trip together
almost every summer since they were about sophomores in high school. He came up
to Crater Lake for about four days that summer that we three were up there. I
tho’t I recognized him when I met him. Sweetheart, I saw the most beautiful
sight when we were coming home. If you could only have been with us. We were
coming over the hills that surround the bay region and we could see out across
the fog that had fallen on the city. It looked beautifully soft and downy. Then
on the other side the sun was setting. It was heavenly. I do wish you could
have seen it. Mrs. Clay gave us a lovely supper and then we went into the front
room and sat around the fire and talked. What with the fog it is quiet chilly
tonight. Tom is working in a bank now. It seems to be a quite worthwhile job.
It certainly has been a nice afternoon. He said if nothing came up he would
take me to see Harriett Hanson tomorrow night. Do you remember her? She and
Margaret Sienis were such good friends. She is married and lives around here
someplace.
Ruggy called up today and said that she had heard from Betty
Zeutner (she got in Friday morning) and she (Ruggy) said she was asking us all
out to her house to luncheon on Tuesday. So we could all get together before
they went back. So I guess times are looking better for me now that we are
going up to the lake. I think we will probably go up there about the fifteenth.
Mom and Pop got back tonight from the Lake and Sacramento but they were asleep
before I got home so I haven’t talked to them yet.
This afternoon and evening I tried so hard not to mention Aladine’s
name but I guess I tried too hard. Because I tried to say something about Janet
and I said Aladine instead but I covered it up quickly. Tom says that he
doesn’t think Dave has gotten over Aladine yet. We were going to see Dan and
George this afternoon but they weren’t out there.
Well, lover, good night and I love you and miss you, dear.
Annie
