This morning George and I went for a walk up by the river.
This afternoon I took a sun bath instead of studying. After tea George came
over and we studied for our Victorian Poets Exam.

George's Letter Home:
It is about time I should write you a letter. In fact the
time is long past, but there has really been no spare moments for this boy for
some time. All this past week I have been very busy with my Junior Week-End
activities and my school work. I am determined that my grades shall not suffer
because of extra curricular activities; and with mid-term examinations upon us,
it has become doubly hard.
Last night Ann and I went to the Mortar Board Ball at the
Eugene Hotel (the Mortar Board is the Senior woman’s honorary that corresponds
to the Friars for Senior men). Everyone looked so nice in their formal attire,
and of course my lil’ Anny looked much better than any of them. After the
dance, Phil let me have his car, and we went way out in the country together.
We didn’t get home until about two, but we certainly had a lovely time
together. Honestly she is the nicest girl that a boy could have (how many other
boys have said the same thing), and I really don’t see what she can find that
appeals to her in me.
This morning Ann and I went walking way up the river, and we
didn’t get back until twelve-thirty, just in time to dress for Sunday dinner.
Sunday dinners are usually rather dreary affairs, not much life to them; but
this one was exceptional. We had a few girls over, and things were rather
cheerful for a change.
Last week I wrote Mr. Price a letter, telling him that I
could not work for him this summer because I had to go to the ROTC Camp at
Vancouver for six weeks. I did it more or less for the purpose of finding out
just where I stood with the old gentleman. Much to my surprise, I received a
letter in return that said I would be employed at Crater Lake any summer that I
liked. Perhaps next summer things will have picked up so that I could make some
money up there; it will at least be nice to know where you can turn to find a
job. Although I don’t particularly care for him as an employer, the fact that
he will hire me should not be disregarded when I have three more years of school
left. I have enclosed the letter within.
I don’t know how much time I will have for you this Mother’s
Day, Mother; but I shall not neglect you. Ann has offered to take care of you
again; so you will at least have company. I do want you to come, though, for
then you can see my first big job in this old world. I certainly hope I put it
over.
Love, Brother
Invitation to Junior Weekend:
Invitation to Junior Weekend:
Dear Mrs. Hibbard
I am sure it is a matter of great pleasure to you that
George was appointed Chairman of Junior Week-End. Each year at this time we
invite our mothers down so that they may spend Mother’s Day with their son and
also so that they may become better acquainted with all of us in the Lodge. I
sincerely hope that you will come down and spend this weekend with us, or, if
not all, at least Sunday when we will have a banquet at the Lodge. I am
enclosing a sheet giving the program arranged, and I am sure you will enjoy
every minute of your visit should you come. Would you please let us know of your
decision as soon as possible, so that we may make your reservations at the
hotel and the other arrangements.
Yours truly,
Peter Gantenbein
