George's letter home:
‘Lo Mom,
Huzza, Huzza, how are things down in the low altitudes –
Huh? Answer me that!
Things up here are just as lousy as ever. Right now, it is
snowing and I am loafing in the lobby (Mr. Price is in Klamath Falls).
Saturday, Orin and I went for a hike on the Cascade Divide
trail. My, we certainly passed through some beautiful country. Great forests,
little open meadows filled with wild flowers, along tiny little springs, down
steep canyons, until we finally ended on the highway. We flipped a coin and
started hiking up the road to our left. About two miles of walking brought us
to Anna Springs, the checking station you and Dad passed through from Medford.
That meant we were six miles from home; and it was five o’clock, just a half hour
from dinnertime. We were lucky though, and accepted a ride back.
Yesterday, Sunday, Anne and I went down to the lake right
after lunch and remained there all day. We rode clear around the lake in the
motor launch and had a little taste of sea life. There were three foot waves on
the water; and the boat rocked and tossed around, throwing spray all over us.
We got off on the island and climbed to the top. We came down in time to be
picked up at five, and then we had to do more climbing to reach the rim. It was
fun, and we both went to bed all tired out.
That is all for now. Thank you so much for removing me from
the financial abyss.
Love, Brother
